Description
Pelicans of either kind, Brown or White, are unusual in Ontario. However Brown Pelicans are especially rare, showing up as vagrant species rather than rare but regular breeding species that White Pelicans are. This Brown Pelican, a stray from the Gulf of Mexico or some similar locale, showed up on Lake Erie this summer. Most of the time, it was reported from Cleveland, OH, but on at least 2-3 occasions it flew across the border and appeared on the Ontario side. This image was taken just off the harbour area of the fishing village of Wheatley, at the extreme SW end of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. It is backlit but the only opportunity I had to photograph it. Here it is stretching in the early morning sun, getting ready for its day ahead.
