Water Play

Description

When you hear a little scurrying, there’s a good chance it’s a raccoon. Sitting atop a wall at a local creek one August morning, I hear something like little hands slapping the water. I look a little closer and see who those little hands belong to and voila! I see not one, but two raccoons. And it saw me, too. These photos are of one of the raccoons — the other was too deep into the long grass to get a good snap. According to Britannica, raccoons dip their hands in water to softens their outer skin layer, letting them “see” and feel the texture, weight and size of their food with extreme precision.
