After fighting off intruding beavers, this beaver colony has started building scent mounds along their territorial boundaries. Beavers construct scent mounds as a way to warn other beavers to stay out of their colonies territory. Beavers are mostly peaceful creatures, but will defend their lodges and territory aggressively.

Thanks very much Sticks
Hi Heidi,
Thanks for your response, I appreciate it.
Before they started to build this mound, there were a few (that I personally listened too) beaver battles going on. I have photos of one of the beavers with some pretty serious wounds to his face. These mounds were created after a few days of these skirmishes. I've yet to see that wounded beaver again.
Love it Nick :) Great work and focus.
Great photo! But what you should say is INSTEAD of fighting off intruders. Scent mounds are a non-violent way to let others know they're not welcome, or that a female is needed, or that there is no male. Scent mounds can be keep out signs OR singals ads.
