Its estimated over 300,000 otters were present in 1778 when Captain James Cook visited the west coast of Vancouver Island. The fur trade took its toll however and animals were pushed to near extinction in BC 100 yrs ago. They are still considered a "species of concern" though as this otter demonstrates- "we're back!
