The historic village of Silver Islet lies stretched out along Lake Superior's shoreline south of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. Back in the 1870s, Silver Islet was a mining community that got it's name from a tiny islet which lies 1.2 kil off shore from the village. In 1868 a vein of silver was discovered on the islet which in it's heyday proved to be the richest silver vein in the world, producing $3.25 million worth of silver ore over 14 years. Today the village of Silver Islet survives in the care of local artisans, seasonal cottagers, fishermen and the general store.
