Apollo faces a strategic region of Pompeii, with Mount Vesuvius ever present in the background. The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. buried this city (and several other settlements) for centuries to come. Its impact on the region is not over yet as it is has erupted many times since and it is the only volcano on Europe's mainland to have erupted in the last 100 years. Furthermore, it is considered to be one of the most dangerous volcanos in the world, given the density of the population in it's danger zone and surrounding region (600,000 people in danger zone and 3 million in areas to be affected). It is therefore carefully studied and monitored and there are emergency evacuation plans. Ultimately though nature tends to always have the upper hand.
