A major tourism draw today for its unmistakable character, unique volcanic beaches, and stunning scenery, like its neighbouring communities the town of Amalfi is steeped in history. The placid azure coloured sea enveloping the town was once a bustling highway for the powerful trading port of Amalfi. An independent republic from the 7th century until 1073, this trading community rivalled Pisa in importance, until the rise of Venice. Ship cargos carrying grain, salt, timber, and slaves, were sold for Gold Dinas minted in Egypt and Syria. The gold was used to purchase Byzantine Silks that were then sold to the west. At its height of influence, around one thousand years ago, there were 70-80,000 people living here. Today the year round population is closer to 5,000 people.
