My favourite photographs are ones that would lend themselves to a painting, whether digital or by hand. Something about this perspective of the Amalfi Town seems to be just such an image. I'm hoping in time to create some small prints on the locally made paper from the ancient river mills of this region. Paper is said to have originated in China during the second century. From there the techniques were exported to Persia and the Syria-Palestinian Coast, before entering Spain and North Africa. By the 13th Century, Amalfi was one of the most important Paper Manufacturers of the region, thanks to its abundance of suitable rivers for the mills, and access to cloth. This influence remained until the 18th Century when the hand-made paper process gave way to the more automated machinery process. I've purchased a few sheets of Amalfi's beautifully created 100% Cotton Acid Free Ph Neutral paper, for experimenting with in the coming year.
