I stopped at this small abandoned church on the 3rd day of my road trip through Saskatchewan in May, 2023. The drive to get here from my previous location took me almost 2 hours and 150 kms. After I left this church, my next location would be almost 3 hours away and about 250kms. I was so tired by the time I got to this church that I had to take a nap before I started taking pictures. I had started my day in Moose Jaw, having slept in the back of my Toyota Rav 4 in a Walmart parking lot. From Moose Jaw, I drove to Bayard, Dummer, Kayville, then down to Big Muddy, over to Stonehenge, then Shaunavon and then I ended day 3 in Swift Current. This abandoned church on a hill in the prairies of Southern Saskatchewan was built in 1925 and served as the only Lutheran Church within a 64-kilometre radius. The congregation used it until a newer church was constructed in the 1960s. The overall design of the church is very modest, but it contains Gothic references in the windows and bell tower. Some of the chairs that are still in the building were purchased with the initial property in 1925. The organ was also purchased at the time of the building’s construction for $3, and the tower bell was ordered directly from Bell Works of Hamburg Germany in 1925.
