The Story of One Sole Photo Last week there were visible Northern Lights as well as the Perseids meteor shower, so when it started getting dark, I headed out to a place I like to go sometimes. This is a filled-in quarry I believe and it's a good spot to go when I feel like taking night photos, alone, by the water. I parked my car, headed in and was ready to get comfortable for a few hours as I awaited the aurora borealis and hoped to catch some of the meteor shower. The second I stepped foot in the grass I was assaulted by mosquitos, I was not prepared for this. I put my hoodie over my head, but being summer - it was too damn hot to wear a hoodie, especially over my head. Thinking I could handle this, as the mosquitoes search for every possible way to my flesh, I set up my camera with a good bit of sky and the lake to catch reflections and some tall grass in the foreground. I get a test shot, and it's okay - I can work with this, but the mosquitoes in this section are actually killing me, so I head back up to a more open area and higher ground on an ATV trail, maybe they won't be so bad up there. Hiking back up the hill, tall grass all around me and a face full of mosquitoes, swatting angrily, sweating profusely through my hoodie, I arrive at the trail on higher ground, things are not looking much better up here. Setting up my camera again, in search of a nice POV to capture the night sky - I gave up. The mosquitoes have won and I have lost - a 30-minute drive to the quarry, 45 minutes of hiking, sweating, swatting and setting up and another 30-minute drive home, and this one sole photo is all I got!! It's been one week and I am still itchy!
