There are moments in wildlife photography that go far beyond the photograph itself. This was one of them.
A protective red fox mother stands her ground, staring down one of Newfoundland's apex predators—a Newfoundland coyote. Larger and more powerful than their mainland relatives, these coyotes carry wolf ancestry, making them an even more formidable presence in our wilderness.
For a few unforgettable moments, the silence was filled with tension. Every instinct told the fox to protect her family, while the coyote carefully measured the situation.
Neither animal backed down easily. It was a raw reminde that nature is beautiful, but it is also unforgiving.
This image holds an even deeper meaning for me. It marks my very first encounter-and first photograph-of a coyote in the wild. Even more special, I experienced it alongside my daughter, Kinley, who has recently discovered her own passion for photography. Sharing a moment like this through our camera lenses is something I'll never forget.
Sometimes photography isn't just about capturing wildlife
—it's about preserving a story. A story of courage, survival, and the memories we create with the people who stand beside us when nature gives us a glimpse into its wild heart.
